Art: Digging for Rainbows by Artist Kathabela Wilson
This piece is one of a series of photographs I took of what I call "natural readymades". The art of surrealists Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray brought me to a new way of looking and expressing my experience. Duchamp's own series of readymades were groundbreaking and spoke of his Parisian environment. Living on the Santa Barbara coast, I walked along the beach each day, and found objects on site, and placed them in interesting positions, (similar in spirit to the surrealists, in some ways, but very different in look and personality) so as to invite thought and feeling, and to expose the power in the natural shapes. Another name I have given them is "ocean works" as it seemed as if by looking in this new way, the art created by the beach and ocean was on display. This art has several levels, first recognizing the object, placing it, and photographing the often ephemeral beauty. This was especially challenging, as the colorful bubbles appeared for a short while, and were gone...this was really the way it looked, not color enhanced!! The yellow strainer-spoon was probably left by a child on the beach, Its stunning color contrasted with the rainbow bubbles in a dramatic way.
