This is a Philadelphia vireo perched on a branch of a blossoming crab apple tree. This less common relative of the more familiar red-eyed vireo nests in forests and orchard edges of eastern North America. I wanted to get a strong feeling of spring with the cascades of flowers. The leaves were especially fun to do, though the blossoms were different shapes and colors from those usually in my work.
Done expressly for the show "Awakening", it refers to nature awakening after winter's hibernation and how everything from plants to wildlife are very busy in the welcome warmer weather.
Won Honorable Mention at the 2018 Westlake-Westshore Juried Art show.
