Art: 'BIG MEDICINE' by Artist Gretchen Del Rio
The white buffalo is sacred within Native American spirituality.  The legend is that a holy woman brought the peace pipe to the Lakota. She taught them how to pray using the pipe and she told them of the value of the buffalo, women and children. She told the women that they were from Mother Earth. She said to them that what they were doing was as great as what the warriors were doing. Then, she left saying that she would return and then turned into a female white buffalo calf. White buffalos are very rare. Whenever one is born  it is considered auspicious. ‘Big Medicine’ was a white bison male who lived 1933 to 1959.
