When I looked at this image with the cloud over shadowing and englufing the colorful areas I felt the clouds symbolized a total desire for riches. In other Words Avarice......total. I also saw the cloud as creeping up on the unsuspecting colorful areas much as I think Avarice would creep up on one suffering from it.
