Sugar Skull With Roses

Art: Sugar Skull With Roses by Artist Carissa M Martos
I have a fascination with skulls stemming, in part, from my son's multiple craniectomies and vault restructurings. The sugar-skull tradition in Mexican Day of The Dead celebrations seems a way to explore that fascination without becoming too morbid.

My skull is a photograph of an actual infant skull, digitally dyed and painted, with stone eyes. I assemble it digitally, because they leave fewer scraps than traditional collage. These, like all my pieces, are freehand creations. This "Sugar Skull" has tattoo-inspired roses made of pink, blue and white roses, irises, and rose leaves encircling it.

This piece is a work of digital art, and as such, can be purchased in sizes ranging from 5x7s up to 16x20 inch fine-art Giclee prints. They are printed on fiber-based fine art paper and can be mounted on foam core. All these prints are signed and hand numbered in limited runs of 50, but can be purchased in notecard/journal/other product form.

This was entered in the Ripped off Show, when I partnered with Jordana Hawen.
