Isis, Star of the Sea, mother goddess and patron of nature and magic, worshipped first in ancient Egypt before her mystery religion spread throughout the Mediterranean, eventually spanning the extent of the Greco-Roman world. When ancient pagan religions were suppressed, her adherents transferred their devotion to the new religion, embodied in the Virgin Mary.
