Is a hat a vessel? Well it is made to contain something, in this case a head. The normal thinking for a vessel is to contain an item to prevent gravity spilling it on the floor. With a hat, it contains a head to prevent icy ears. I stand by my decision to consider a hat a vessel, after all a certain fictional bear is known for keeping marmalade sandwiches in his! Anyway, this hat was made with Merino wool on my kitchen table. I sized it by pulling it over my head whilst I was making it which left me all damp and soggy but got the hat the right shape and size. This piece is made with a resist which means the whole hat is made in one piece with no seams anywhere. A piece of cardboard was placed between layers of wool whilst I felted them and then removed when the wool was matted but still soft enough to allow manipulation of the shape. And finally three cheers for the sheep for providing such gorgeous wool in the first place.
