Wood Carved Pumpkins

Art: Wood Carved Pumpkins by Artist Alma Lee

Sometime back, when I felt immortal,(1999) I took it into my head that I should give wood carving a whirl. I jury rigged my husbands circular hand saw disabling the safety gaurd. As I sat indian sytle, I held the on button with my left hand as I worked the wooden core back and forth to saw the shapes of the pumpkins. Just so you know nothing happened as stupid as that was, and then a short time later I discovered the dremel tool and that made my job much safer!lol

These were carved and then sanded making the edges smooth. I than painted them with 2 layers of acrylic metallic copper, and a thick coat of rabbit glue. Once that was dry I painted over that with a pumpkin orange, followed by a coat of varnish. I pulled apart a metal spring, drilled a small hole and with epoxy glue I placed on the tip of the wire I glued them in. I did the same with the attached greenery. Each pumpkin was different. I probably made 25 that year, this is a cross sample I kept for display.

For personal reasons, as a rule we don't celebrate Halloween, and carving pumpkins in particular is not something we are inclined to do, but these, that year were the exception they were pumpkins and the were carved. We sold most of them and use the others as thanksgiving decorations our favorites.
