Art: A Nintendo Controller by Artist Aimee L. Dingman
I have a serious weakness. That weakness is vintage. On top of my already strong love of games. So I guess this is natural. I give you something iconic, something you have probably held at least once. The NES controller. With this piece, I returned to the solid white setting, which really allows some intriguing and unexpected shadows to be explored. I began as usual by bringing out the darkest areas, gradually moving towards the lightest, incorporating some of the object color into the shadows. For the cord shadow, I feathered the more distant parts into the solid white, and I love how this allows the viewer to infer the shape of the unseen parts of the cord. For the actual controller, I paid close attention to the details, while trying not to become too mathematical in my approach. I think the result is a nice tribute to a popular vintage object that is painterly and realistic, without being too cold. I particularly enjoyed the interesting shadows that were thrown by the curling cord, and I must admit, that the long black wire was very fun to paint and highlight.
