Vision can be conceptual within the mind or sensual via the eye. Both definitions are found in art when the vision of the artist is perceived by the vision of those that view it.
My recent work deals with the landscape of the West where I have lived for many years.
This is an impression of my driveway at sunset. I was attracted to the contrast between the darkening landscape and the last bright splashes of sunlight, and to the long shadows cast by the trees.
I chose to render the scene in an almost abstract fashion to emphasize the play of colors. Having great admiration for Cezanne and the later Fauve movement, I like to use pure, saturated color to bring my subject to life on the canvas. I concentrate on conveying a sense of time and place rather than strict realism.
