The Coming of Winter

- by D Loren Champlin

This week's theme: The Waning of Autumn

In the Northern Hemisphere, we are roughly 2/3's of the way through Autumn. Things are looking more bare and exposed and the vibrant colours of earlier in the season are giving way to weathered browns and greys. The days are shorter, the nights are colder and Winter is close at hand.

Art: The Coming of Winter by Artist D Loren Champlin

Description

This is a portrait of a mother and child entitled The Coming of Winter.

Materials:

very traditional - oil on portrait linen,

Process:

the linen is hand stretched and primed with gesso in a very traditional fashion. I always use brushes or the ends of brushes.

information about the subject and why chosen:

nobody in particular actually was used as a model in this particular case. It is something I had kept sketching out over and over and screamed to be painted. .Fall in Maine can have brutally bitter winds especially in October and November when the first snows arrive. My son hates the wind and always wants to be carried and sheltered from it was the root of the inspiration for this piece. This was exhibited at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery "Serenade From a Star" Aug 1-26, 2008. And is framed.
