Cat Clock Box

- by Gretchen Myers

This week's theme: The Hands Of Time

While sitting in a waiting room recently, I found myself reading "20 Things You Didn't Know About Time" in the March Issue of Discover Magazine. It has stayed in my mind, so I thought I would see what the EBSQ Galleries had to offer on time and all things time related. This week, EBSQ's Art Of The Day showcases just a small sample of what my search turned up.

Art: Cat Clock Box by Artist Gretchen Myers
Constructed of 1/2" wood and embellished with modeling paste, gold metal leaf, polymer clay, decorative wood moldings, acrylic paint, a carved stone cat & a clock mechanism. Lid lifts off. Measures 6 1/8 w x 6 1/8 d x 12 1/2" tall, box itself is 4 x 4, inside dimensions are 3 x 3 x 8. Clock is battery operated and is easy to change. Inside is lined in black suede board. Although I may repeat a theme I find particularly interesting, each piece is individually crafted. They’re not meant to be examples of perfection but have a quality of simplicity or primitiveness about them. The use of found objects and hand-constructed elements adds to this concept. This is important because I find it lends a sense of whimsy and/or eccentricity, which is the spirit in which I approach each piece. These containers are meant to be used, albeit handled with care. I would like to think that many years from now they'll still be around, maybe a little battered and dirty but treasured as an odd remnant from the past.
