Black Cows in Winter

- by MARY ANNE Z. O'SULLIVAN

This week's theme: Shades of Grey

Grey is special. It isn't just one thing. It provides contrast, shading and can stand alone. Grey can strike on note or many. It can be retiring and soft or strong and dramatic. The space between black and white is vast and filled with many shades of grey.

Art: Black Cows in Winter by Artist MARY ANNE Z. O'SULLIVAN
Large herds of Black Angus are raised in the Kittitas Valley where I live. (Stewart Anderson had a ranch here.) The velvety black cows and calves stand out against the softly greyed snow on a misty winter morning. Here they calmly await the hay wagon and their breakfast to arrive.

I enjoy painting the muted grey colors of winter especially when there is mist to soften all the edges. I used oil this time because of it's viscosity and ability to create the lost and found edges that I love.
