Art of the Day: Thursday October 22, 2015

saint of the sea

- by Alexis Covato

This week's theme: Saints

Bakers Evangelical Dictionary on BibleStudyTools.com begins it's definition of the word "Saint" this way:

  • The word "saint" is derived from a Greek verb (hagiazo) whose basic meaning is "to set apart, " "sanctify, " or "make holy."

While most of us have at least a passing acquaintance with religious saints, we have always created our own saints. Our saints range from cultural saints, to family members, to those people that we personally revere. This week EBSQ's Art of the Day presents a variety of saints as interpreted by our EBSQ artists.

Art: saint of the sea by Artist Alexis Covato
"Saint of the Sea" is a whimsical surrealist painting.  This image combines mythology, spiritual beliefs, and pop culture in an epic image.  LEX's character, the Abdominal Cyclops, plays the role of St. of the Sea.  The god / guardian of the sea references Poseidon.  The figure is abstracted, tattooed, and is seen with its pet shark.
