Embrace the Words: Serene

- by Candace Stephens

This week's theme: Fibre Art

EBSQ has a wide variety of galleries, filled with a diverse assortment of art. Over the upcoming months, Art Of The Day will be featuring explorations of the EBSQ Galleries that will be more in-depth than one short week can provide.

For the next few weeks, Art Of The Day will present art from the Fibre Art gallery.

Fibre Art is the use of textiles to create art or the creation of the textiles themselves.

Art: Embrace the Words: Serene by Artist Candace Stephens
Serene is one of a series of pillows using piecing and complex cloth techniques. Techniques used include hand dyeing, diffusion painting, dye discharge, dye painting and shibori. The images are etchings from children's magazines from the 1880's that I have transfered onto the fabric and the larger words are hand stamped using an antique sign maker's kit. The colors are vibrant, complex and have depth which is difficult to see on the scan. I use is a top quality cotton sateen which has a luxurious texture and sheen. The back has an envelop opening which make removal for washing easy. Care: Wash on gentle cycle. The Heron in this illustration IS so serene.
