Art of the Day: Wednesday October 04, 2017

Sparrow Hawk

- by Naquaiya

This week's theme: Raptors

A raptor is a bird of prey. To an ornithologist that means a bird with exceptional eyesight, strong feet, as well as a strong and curved beak. Most raptors also have strong, curved talons. It's these characteristics make them formidable hunters. EBSQ's Art of the Day focuses this week on three species of raptor - hawks, falcons and eagles.

This is a new watercolor that combines soft watercolor washes that are accented with speedball nib using a walnut ink well. Walnut ink has a very soft appearance and unusual color but it does bleed when touched with a wet brush. In this drawing the ink is applied on top of the watercolor wash, for a really nice combination.
