ELU

- by Gretchen Del Rio

This week's theme: Owls

The wise old owl to a bad omen and every superstition in between has been hung on the owl. In some cultures the owl protects and in others it is a messenger of the spirits. In reality the owl family is a diverse and versatile group of raptors that can be found everywhere but some remote islands and the continent of Antarctica. Their beauty is unique and their hunting ability superb. They possess a mystery and fascination equaled by no other creature in the night.

Elu is a Zuni name meaning beautiful. Zuni mothers placed an owl feather with their babies so that they would sleep peacefully.
