Bondage

- by Sze Lin, Teo

This week's theme: Nothing Too Serious

For this week's Art of the Day, all the art leans toward the lighthearted. There is nothing dour or staid to be seen. What you will see is a variety of media, plenty of colour, some looping lines and uncommon subjects.

Some of the most destructive emotions like Anger, Jealousy, Regret can be so debilitating it literally cages us, prevents us from living life the way it should be.  It feels almost impossible to let it go as it feels very much a part of us.  How dare this person insult my mother? Why should the good-for-nothing down the street drive a bigger car and live in a bigger house than me? Why isn’t he calling me yet- who does he think he is- God’s gift to women?

Notice, most of the time our emotions arise due to the way we think about a situation? The more we think, the more it feeds the negative emotion, the worse we feel and the more embroiled we are in that emotion.

But there is a way out of the cage of negativity, and here I subscribe to Eckhart Tolle’s teaching of Beingness, Surrendering to the present moment and Fully Accepting the NOW.  Say you were passed over for a promotion, it went to someone younger (and better-looking)… feel the disappointment, accept the anger you may have towards the organization, your boss who supported that decision, the inequity of it all.  Be with the horrible situation, feel the emotion, soak it all up and watch what happens. More likely than not, you will begin to feel a sense of detachment, and realize that the emotion you were feeling is not you, it was an automatic reaction to a life situation, and you are wayyyy more than that, and THAT is the way out of the cage of negativity.

You have a choice to choose how you want to feel, have you made that choice yet?
