Clamming Weather

- by Carol Thompson

This week's theme: Let's Go To The Beach

We are drawn to the places where sand, water and sky meet. The sounds are different. The ground underfoot is different. The smells, the air - it's all different. At first we were drawn to the beach because of the abundance of food. Now it's not just for food that we go. We go to the beach to play and relax. The beach is a place to gather with others and to find solitude. It doesn't matter where it is. It doesn't matter what the season or what the weather - we will always be drawn to the beach.

Art: Clamming Weather by Artist Carol Thompson

"Any kind of weather is clamming weather, rain or shine."

Artist comment:  "When the tide is low, on a beautiful afternoon, the beaches of the Northwest coast begin to fill up with people carrying shovels, buckets, nets and clam guns.  This pastel painting on Canson Mi-Teintes paper is one such scene.  I was captivated by the beautiful thunderhead building out over the sea.  The clam diggers are miniaturized by the huge sky.  I painted a large swath of sand and wet beach.  Then I painted the people as I remembered them (and from my own digging experience).  I added a few dark strips of wet sand and then the reflections."
