Lilac

- by Lisa Thornton Whittaker

This week's theme: In the Garden

Three times a year, in the neighbourhood next to mine, there is a plant sale. It's an older neighbourhood with homes dating back to the 1920's Some of the original owners had wonderful gardens. They built paths that wound through the gardens and connected them all together. These paths are still there and are open to anyone who wishes to walk through and enjoy the gardens. After some years there were so many plants, they started having plant sales with plants from their gardens. This tradition is continued buy the current home owners, who in some cases, are the children and grandchildren of the first owners. This neighbourhood tradition is such a unique and special thing, EBSQ wanted to attempt to share a little bit of the experience with you.

Art: Lilac by Artist Lisa Thornton Whittaker
I like to paint flowers very close up so that they fill the entire canvas. I like to focus on the power of the single elements that make up the entire picture our mind typically generates when we think “shrub” or “lilac.” For me this vantage point exploits the energy of the flower, as though one could dive into this burst of purple. This flower was a challenge because the close vantage required particular care in setting up the composition.

This painting was created for the FOTM Lilac Show.
