Art of the Day: Saturday June 09, 2012

- by Donna Gill

This week's theme: In the Garden

Three times a year, in the neighbourhood next to mine, there is a plant sale. It's an older neighbourhood with homes dating back to the 1920's Some of the original owners had wonderful gardens. They built paths that wound through the gardens and connected them all together. These paths are still there and are open to anyone who wishes to walk through and enjoy the gardens. After some years there were so many plants, they started having plant sales with plants from their gardens. This tradition is continued buy the current home owners, who in some cases, are the children and grandchildren of the first owners. This neighbourhood tradition is such a unique and special thing, EBSQ wanted to attempt to share a little bit of the experience with you.

Art: Kiki by Artist Donna Gill
This is my entry in the EBSQ Flower of the Month Show, January 2010. This piece was part of a fun collaborative project with my fellow artists and close friends, Kris Jean and Robin Cruz McGee. We all worked from the same reference and inspiration, Kiki the orchid. Kiki lives with Robin currently but I might need to steal her, as she has become an intimate friend as I worked on this piece. I hope you enjoy this up close and personal look at her, and please take a look at Robin and Kris's very different interpretations of the same subject matter.
