The Way of Death

- by Alma Lee

This week's theme: Halloween

It used to be that a day began at sundown. It's this reason many religions holy days, holidays and celebrations begin at sundown. The two that most people are familiar with is Halloween - or All Hallows Eve, and Samhain. Sundown on Thursday is the start of the Christian observance of Hallowmas. Hallowmas begins on All Hallows Eve, followed by All Saints Day and All Souls Day. The Celtic celebration of Samhain also begins at sundown on Thursday. Samhain and Hallowmas both are times to honor the dead. While the dead are still a large part of Halloween, for most of us Halloween has become all about costumes, candy, haunted houses, parties, skeletons, trick or treating, witches on brooms, getting scared silly and simply having a good time.

Art: The Way of Death by Artist Alma Lee
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death!

This is one of the scariest verses I have ever read and frustrating at the same time. Because as humans we have a vast potential of knowlege and intellect.  We believe it possible to achieve immortality by a change in attitude, behavior and logical thought.  It all seems possible but it fails to factor in our very nature, the fault of just being human, the delightful, delisouisness of delusions and dreams.  We are at once, aspiring in spirit and falling in sin.  Without Christ the bones of Elisha gave no cause to rise.
