Carny Art

- by Stephanie Dyke

This week's theme: Fibre Art

EBSQ has a wide variety of galleries, filled with a diverse assortment of art. Over the upcoming months, Art Of The Day will be featuring explorations of the EBSQ Galleries that will be more in-depth than one short week can provide.

For the next few weeks, Art Of The Day will present art from the Fibre Art gallery.

Fibre Art is the use of textiles to create art or the creation of the textiles themselves.

Art: Carny Art by Artist Stephanie Dyke
I love the nostalgia and fake glitz of carnivals and sideshows but I wanted to create something that wasn't so obvious. This piece came together with a lot of found objects and images. The hand quilting is pretty uncomplicated in order to let the chaos of the quilt shine. The found objects include Audobon prints, flash cards, measuring tape fragments, silk flower petals, plastic beads, vintage trims and, of course my signature tacky spangles. The key images and the main text are rubber stamped on thin vinyl and stitched onto the body of the quilt.
