Flight 666, now arriving at Gate 13

- by W. Kevin Murray

This week's theme: Fences

Good fences make make good neighbors, don't fence me in, on the fence, mend fences, whitewash the fence, swing for the fences... I could go on, but you get the point.

To say the least, this image scared the "proverbial s**t" out of me at first ! I was driving around and photographing wildlife behind the Philadelphia International Airport back in August of this year. Of course memories of 9 / 11 came flashing back when I saw that there was a jet being consumed by flames. There was no sound, no sirens, no flashing lights, everything was very calm. Except for me! I had already pulled into a ditch on the side of the road and gotten out of the car, without thinking I headed towards the fence. I don't even remember grabbing the camera, but there it was in my hand right by my side, so I started shooting. Still no sounds of an emergency, just the roar of the fire now, a very serial moment for me. The wind suddenly changed direction which then formed spirals of fire that danced 30 to 40 feet high. At that moment I could see the plane had no wings... no alarms, no fire trucks... nothing ! Then as the fire started to die and I could see more clearly it accured to me... it was a dummy jet, sitting on blocks, that the airport was using for some kind of fire testing. Behind the flames and out of my sight and off to the right where several trucks with men observing the whole burn. These photos where captured on a Canon 10D digital camera using a 75-300mm IS lens. Printed on Epson Luster paper using an Epson 2200 printer.
