There are many kinds of families in this world. There are small, medium and large ones. There are nuclear families, extended families, families by blood, families by marriage, families by choice, nontraditional families and clans - just to name few. They don't all look the same or act the same. Many of us claim several kinds of families as our own. Yes, there are different types of families, but what actually makes a family, a family, remains constant. Families are made of shared values, deep bonds and the sense of being part of a "we", and each one has value.
Last summer (2008) they took all four of their grandchildren on an adventure and to the zoo in their huge motorhome. The campground site had a pond, so 'Granddad' let the kids throw their fishing poles in while he did the same (okay, little Cameron mostly just played with the ducks and the fishing worms). I hear they didn't catch any fish that day. 'Grandmom' did, however, catch plenty on camera.
After they returned from their trip, I combined a picture of each of the 5 and a couple shots of the pond and background and merged them in a portrait for the grandparents over the holidays. From back to front in the painting there's Granddad (Carl), Cyle, Chloe, Corey, and little Cameron with the fishing worms. I photographed this art piece after 'Grandmom' (who's never in the photographs because she's always the one cooking or toting the camera) had the work put in a beautiful custom frame. The family dog, Cookie, is the center of a work in progress... and beyond that I can't say anything because the rest is a secret only I can know!
