African

- by Nancy Denommee

This week's theme: Doll Art

Dolls are not just children's playthings. They find their way into many aspects of our life. We use them in religious rituals, for decoration, as totems and to personify aspects of our psyche and the natural world.

They can be realistic or abstractly representational but whatever form they take, we continue to create them for all of these reasons and more.

Art: African by Artist Nancy Denommee
This figurative sculpture is made of authentic African fabric and trade beads. I have hand sculpted her head from polymer clay. Her hair is of threads that I pulled from the edges of the fabric. There is a brass lion's head on the top of her head. She is meant to be a piece of wall art. A strong waxed linen cord is attached to her back for ease of display.
