Red Bluffs

- by Shirley James

This week's theme: Cliffs, Canyons and Bluffs

We view erosion as something negative. We fight erosion. We build structures to prevent erosion. Erosion costs us money, our homes and businesses. As natural processes go, it's a powerful and insistent one. While we are not fans of erosion in the present, we are in awe of what erosion has created in the past. Some of the most striking landscapes exist because of erosion. Some of these features took millions of years to create, some far fewer. It's the constant movement of wind and water created the landscape features we love and that makes all of them - regardless of age, a work in progress.

Art: Red Bluffs by Artist Shirley James
The more I work with Joshua Tree wood the more that I enjoy it as a base for my pyrography. The depth of color with the burning is intensified with the contrast of the colored pencil. Desert landscapes and especially the red bluffs of Sedona take on a special desert feeling.
