The Green Coat

- by Jill Long

This week's theme: Cars

We dream about them. We ogle them. We remember our first one. They are our cars. They take us on adventures, joy rides and to the market. Even though we often complain that we live in our cars - we still give them names, we still like the smell of a new interior and we all know what our ideal ride is. The relationship we have with the automobile is truly a love affair.

Art: The Green Coat by Artist Jill Long
For years I have collected old photographs that either had become lost from their families or simply thrown out. Some faces leap out at me and I bring them home. I exalt their images to canvas. These faces are given another chance to tell their story, this time with a simple girl wearing what I imagine to be an olive green coat. The day is cold and overcast, having rained earlier. This young woman has been on a Sunday drive, after church with her "beau". They have driven a long distance today, loving the time alone together in this borrowed car. They have stopped in a town, one much bigger than their own and not familiar to them. She gets out to explore with girlish giggles and sparkling eyes and in that moment he sees her. He wants to remember always the way she looked the exact moment he realized she was an adventurer. That is the story this photograph has told me.
