Intended as a possible inclusion for the Icognito Show- the two main figures are a homage to the European tradition of paintings called ‘Death and the Maiden' -whilst the Harlequin figure is a sort of reference of two influences, Poes ‘Masque of the Red Death’ (seen in the mask) and Bergmans ‘Seventh Seal’ (referenced in the chess design on his chest). My death is more of a fate figure-a peirot that plays with peoples lives like a puppeteer. The boy is a character I came up with over ten years ago-he’s sort of the antipathy of Alice I guess-looking up at the world with his fearful misanthropic stare. The strange fishman recalls an earlier piece , and the blue box he carries represents melancholy, and the sea which he longs to return to.
The girl is a dark muse, condemned forever to conceal her flambouyance (seen here in the red wings) beneath the heaviness of her dark robes.
