"Fox Den"

- by Heather Sims

This week's theme: Animal Lovers

We all know at least one person that absolutely loves animals. It may be one particular animal that captures the fancy, or it may be a love of animals in general. It's also very possible that the animal lover in your life is you. Regardless of who it is, this week EBSQ's Art of the Day has something for almost every animal lover you know.

Art: Fox Den by Artist Heather Sims
This painting was painted from a photo I took this spring when a family of foxes took residence on our property.   One morning I was trying to call my dog and when he didn't come I went outside to check it out.  I found him running the fence with a fox which really surprised me and I started posting to Facebook all about it.   I would go out with my camera and look for this fox as she was hanging out in broad day light near our fence. Very strange!

Later that morning while I was looking for her to photo I heard noises coming from a pipe that runs under our driveway. It was a sound like a gagging noise.  I posted on Facebook about it and got a lot of curiosity and rooting me on of what was in there.  I suspected that whatever was in this pipe was the reason that the fox was hanging around.  I was too nervous to look in the pipe because really who knows what it could of been.  Maybe it was prey?   I just didn't want to put my head in a dark pipe looking around and have my face eaten off. ;D.   The next evening my husband and I went outside armed with a flashlight and a camera we shined the light in the pipe and took the photo.  Wow.. we got a great shot!  Not one but TWO sets of ears inside.. We found this fox kits!   Over the course of the next few days I got MANY photos of mama fox (which I named her "Betty") and the kits in the pipe.  I'd go out and shine that light in the pipe and snap pictures, I took a short video, many photos and one photo I got had the kits with the neighbor dog's ball!  So cute!  Somehow we managed through the spring with a fox family and my chickens being left alone..  Of course I have my chickens in a predator proof run so I'm sure that helped. ;D

This painting was painted from one of the many photos I took.

Enjoy! :)
