Art of the Day: Monday July 27, 2015

Ask Alice (sold)

- by Dorothy Edwards

This week's theme: Alice's Adventures

Whether they start down a rabbit hole or through a looking glass, Alice's adventures have captured the imaginations of both children and adults for 150 years. The artists at EBSQ are no different and this week Art of the Day presents art inspired by "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass,and What Alice Found There".

Art: Ask Alice (sold) by Artist Dorothy Edwards
This is one of a series of bottles I am working with. A friend of mine saw a few of the bottles I was working on and suggested the "Alice in Wonderland" theme for one of them. She even went that extra mile and came up with the white rabbit - which I instantly beheaded for this bottle. I was thinking "Off with you head" when I was sawing it off.

I recently curated a show for the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, CA. A woman there made three charming bottles with mosaic mixed media. Although my pieces look nothing like hers, I like to say I took some inspiration from her work.

This piece was made with a heart shaped bottle which I adhered with stained glass, millefiori and faux pearls. The words "Drink Me "are on one side the other side has "Ask Alice". The stopper has a long eared white rabbit on top. For grout I used white grout with a lavendar colorant.

This piece is sold: $65
