Art: Vincent by Artist Alma Lee

Starry starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now.

Starry starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.

Starry starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They did not listen, they're not listening still

Perhaps they never will.

One of the playlists I have created on itunes is made up of  only my very very favorite, only 31 have made the cut and among them is Vincent. I was out in my studio when It came on and I don't know why I hadn't thought of it before but this song would be perfect for the Waxing Lyrical show. First off I think that the lyrics with strength enough to stand on their own but Don Mclean picked the perfect tone to enhance it. I began by immersing myself with both. Then when I had in mind which of his paintings would be useful to illustrate his song I ending up picking the following: Irises, 15 sunflowers in a vase, both 1888 and 1889 Starry Night paintings, Eternity's Gate, Portrait of Joseph Roulin and View from the Church in Auvers-sur-Olse.
At first I concentrated on getting a sense of his style, so very different from my own, but I found after I painted for a while that his painting style was truly a passion in motion, there is a definite rhythm to not just his compositions but the way he  may have laid his brush strokes. At least for me I noticed when I fell out of the rhythmic laying down of paint, strokes became labored and awkward. I will never know for sure but in the process I fell in love with Vincent and what he tried to say to me, how he suffered for his sanity and how he tried to set them free, I did not listen, but perhaps I am listening now...indeed the world was mean't for one as beautiful as he.
