I made these wings for Olivia’s third birthday. I tried my best to make them to look like the wings of the
“real” fairy who would visit her party and lead special games. Olivia is the little girl we all were, full of
joy and wonder at the delights of the world. While making the delicate, translucent wings, I thought of
Olivia wearing them on her birthday, feeling especially pretty, and so excited to have a real fairy at her
party. The thought of her delight was with me as I chose the flowers, butterflies and trims. It made me
very happy to contribute to the fun of her special day even though I could not be there in person.
This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for me to reflect on the future of Olivia and of all the little girls
we love. May their world continue to be a magical, joyful place. May they never be touched by the
sorrow of this disease, either personally or in someone they love. Through continued research, may
Olivia and all little girls grow up safe and free to fly in any direction they choose.
These fairy wings are dedicated to my dear sister Terry, who survived breast cancer 23 years ago. Since
her surgery and successful treatment, she has spread her wings and achieved professional success
in Saudi Arabia, where she lived for many years. Now retired, Terry continues to spread her wings. I
was moved recently to see her take part in a dragon boat race with three boatloads of breast cancer
survivors, singing and waving pink carnations of hope for the future and remembrance of our sisters
who have left us.
Thank you, EBSQ, for sponsoring this exhibit.
