I created Hannah, the six finger mermaid. She lives under the sea with her friend Timmy the squid. This piece was created using St Petersburg watercolors. I love the diversity in my artwork. I enjoyed bringing Hannah and the Giant Squid to surface.
I chose the Giant Squid because it has been subject to myths. I depicted the squid in this manner because I wanted the viewer to see the size of the squid in relation to the mermaid. The eye almost looks human and overwhelming. The squid looks in control. I chose bright colors to show the beauty of the ocean.
Stories of giant squids are popular and were mostly told by the sailors.
Since scientists have never observed giant squid alive in their natural habitat. Their carcasses have been washed up on the beaches which make the scientists believe that they are found in all the oceans of the world. Giant squid still remains an unsolved mystery.Squid have a complex digestive system. Food is transported into a muscular stomach. Squid have three hearts. The head end of the squid bears 8 arms and 2 tentacles. Food habits have been also a mystery. Some researchers say that the giant quid eat deep-sea fishes, such as orange ruffie, hokie, shrimp and other deep-sea fishes. There are approximately 500 species of squid. Females are larger than the male. They grow quickly but have a short life span. The giant squid have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom. They are hunted by sperm whales of their size.
