Medium: watercolor and pen & ink on card stock 2 1 /2 x 3 1/2 . The mermaid is making an escape from the eight armed Giant Octopus. The Giant The Giant Octopus is very dominant over any other sea life. Octopuses live in dens, crevices on the sea floor. There are over 100 different octopus species. The Giant Octopus is the biggest octopus. They have a soft body and eight arms. Each arm has two rows of suction cups. If it loses an arm, it will eventually regrow another arm. It has blue blood. An octopus has an eye on each side of its head and has very good eyesight. They cannot hear. Their diet includes small crabs and scallops, snails, fish, turtles and other octopuses. They catch their prey with their arms. They hunt mostly at night. They have three hearts and have a short life span. They are highly intelligent. To escape predators, octopuses can squirt black ink into the water, allowing the octopus to escape. Another defense that octopuses have is changing their skin color to blend into the background, camouflaging themselves. I chose the Giant Octopus because it's mysterious. I depicted it in this manner, because I wanted to show that they are very powerful creatures. I used light washes of watercolor to depict the bright sea colors against the darkness that lays beneath the ocean. The octopus dominates this drawing with it's forceful arms.
