Art: Jeweled Eggs - Rip Off Necklace by Artist Amethyst Lobster
As soon as I saw Deb's painting of eggs, I thought of 3 little vintage white glass beads I've had for a while, just waiting for their special piece. They had always struck me as cold and clean. Using them as eggs was perfect. That was the easy begining. Next, I spent several weeks on the look out for kitchen towels, thinking I'd make fabric covered beads. I finally realized that even if I found the same towels, the scale would be all wrong. So I made some clay links using colors of the towels. When I went to look at the picture again, I was surprised to see all that orange-red! Funny how somethings stand out at different times. I liked the way she used the light, and also noticed the silver circle of light next to the red. I decided they looked like medallions. I had never beaded a medallion, but now I've beaded about 10 - first nine were not up to par! It took several stabs and the right beads and threads/wires before I was happy. This medallion is made of bicone Swarvoski crystals. They are the best sparklers, so I think follow the play of ight in Deb's painting. It bothered me that I still didn't have that sense of a soft cloth contrasting with the hard cold eggs, that Deb's painting has. So I decided to add little bits of blue gingham ribbons. There's nothing more country than blue gingham to me, so it seemed to follow the theme and also give us the sense of touch. The necklace is put together with brass jum rings and clasp that I made, plus some purchased brass chain. The length is totally adjustable. This was a fun contest. Thanks to Deb for partnering with me. Her painting was very inspiring and fun to work from. It also pushed me to try beading a medallion, a new skill now that I can use in future pieces.
