"Ripped Off" from Dawn Henry's "Flight Over Vanuatu" and "Nexus Trio." This "rip" was the most daunting of the four I've entered this year, due to the unique qualities of light and detail that make Dawn's work what it is. Those qualities are difficult if not imposible to capture in my mosaics. So after much thought and a lot of toying with ideas in Photoshop Elements, I decided not to worry about the detail in her work and to instead attempt to capture the blending and clarity of colors and the movement inherent in her work. And with that thought, I dove in and just went with it.
The mosaic is created with 1/2" squares of magazine pages decoupaged onto a canvas panel. I created the layout for the piece in Photoshop Elements, cutting and pasting elements from the originals into one big image. Then I used the grid feature in Elements to divide the plan into all the individual squares so that I could sift through my stash of paper bits to find the ones that most closely approximated what the image was "supposed" to look like in each square.
