Art: Sky in Winter by Artist Robert Charles Tracy
This was done in the winter. On the deck in our back yard in Lafayette, Indiana, I saw in the distance a familiar hill with ruins of an old church. I had my charcoal paper clasped onto a board. The sky was full of snow clouds coming again after an overnight snowfall. This is at sunrise. As cold as it looks it wasn't cold really outside. Done rapidly as the clouds were moving so I had to capture that sky as it changed. Hence the sense of both stillness and movement. And clouds are almost like abstract things that one can get down in smears. Pastels were just right for this painting as one can lay down the entire scene in a few minutes. A few snow flakes falling are "water based" anyway and don't matter to the quick sketch all done in perhaps half an hour. Had to work rapidly--I did, as I saw the full storm on its way. A fun project all in all, something I didn't just happen upon; I had thought of doing such a work and was waiting for it. A fast a furious work appropriate to my choice of Pastels. The paper took my strokes down thickly using mostly very soft colored grays made by ARTWORKS(TM). And blending with my fingers.
