Art: A NATURAL MEMORIAL by Artist Diana Mae Potts
TODAY WAS THE FIRST DAY I EVER WENT TO THE COLLONADE PART OF THE PRINCETON BATTLEFIED. WHILE DRIVING BY, I JUST HAD TO TAKE A WALK THERE. MY INTENTION WAS TO DRAW THE COLONNADE. I WALKED BEYOND IT AND FOUND A CLEAR, GRASSY AREA AND AT THE FARTHEST EDGE OF IT FOUND A FLAT MEMORIAL SAYING THAT NEAR HERE ARE BRITISH AND AMERICAN SOLDIERS BURIED. IT IS AN UNKNOWN SOLDIER BURIAL SITE WHERE THE GRASS IS. THE AREA IS SUROUNDED BY PINE TREES WHICH IN SOME CULTURES IS A SYMBOL OF LONGEVITY; IN THIS CASE MEMORIALIZING THESE SOLDIERS FOR ETERNITY. NEARBY A TREE AREA WITH PINE NEEDLES ALL AROUND, I FOUND A CIRCLE WITH PINE CONES CIRCUMSCRIBING WHAT MUST BE A MEMORIAL MADE TODAY AS THE IVY LEAVES AROUND THE CENTER AREA OF TINY PINE CONES AND WHEAT ARE STILL GREEN. SO I DREW THIS. THE AREA IS SAID TO BE HAUNTED, SO AS I DREW I GOT A SENSE OF THE SYMBOLISM HEREIN. THE STICKS ARE THE BONES OF THE DEAD HERE, THE IVY IS A PLANT NATIVE TO BOTH ENGLAND AND AMERICA, AND THE PINE CONES ARE LONGEVITY. THE RAIN THAT WAS SPRINKLING DOWN AS I DREW IT WERE TEARS.
