Art: Betrayal by Artist D Loren Champlin

Reclining nude entitled "Betrayal." This was exhibited at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery "Serenade From a Star" Aug 1-26, 2008.

what compelled me about this subject: Well a few things actually, being a nude is when you are the most honest. I love the pose and the way the colour engulfs the subject.

It is really a love story so to speak. We have all had moments in our life where we have felt betrayed and helpless from disease, a date who didn't show, or a love one who didn't return and want to lean back with a bottle of wine and just sit there and feel sorry for ourselves. The colours and the lines in this piece depict how inevitably we recover from the tragedy and continues on. It is the joy in the painting following the despair. It is a story. To know joy one must first know sorrow and betrayal.

Information of the creation of the piece Well, it all started with a sketch of a model as most of my works do. The story evolved in my mind as between the sketches and the painting, so I had a fairly clear idea of how I wanted to paint it by the time the linen was hand stretched and hand primed. The painting was done several weeks after the initial sketches and as an expressionist, the lines and the color pretty much evolve over the course of working the painting. So basically a large oil painting on stetched linen. In this case about a month. Definitely one of my favorite pieces. Maybe the colours, bright pinks, purples, and reds, or perhaps the pose itself.
