Art: Holy Mother-SOLD by Artist Carolyn Flores
This is a retablo style painting that is done in great reverence for, Our lady of Guadalupe the matriarch who is saintly, pious, chaste, and most virtuous women ever. Instead of the traditional rays around the Guadalupe, I have replaced them with roses and leaves. During the middle ages, the rose was seen as the queen of flowers, symbol of the Virgin Mary, also representing romance, religion and healing. I chose this painting for the More than birth: Matriarchs, Mothers and Mothering show because; in Christian times, Mother's Day was a day in honor of the Virgin Mary and the Church. In England, in the 13th century, Henry III of England (1216-1239) introduced "Mothering Sunday": on the Sunday before Easter sons and daughters went back home to visit the church where they were baptized and worshipped as children. This also meant that they returned to their (earthly) mothers, and soon they too were honored with gifts, flowers and special Mothering Day cakes. The painting is done in acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas. There is no need for a frame because I have painted the sides in black with designs of yellow roses. Thank you for looking.
