Art: Likin' the Lichen by Artist Deanne Flouton
A small brown thrush had just flown into a window by my office and I found him stunned and upside down on the grass. Pegged as a goner, I reached down to turn him upright hoping that he had only momentarily knocked himself unconscious.

He had not recovered by the time I had returned with a camera, but quietly held his ground and gave me the "hairy eyeball". We stared each other down for a few minutes, just enough time to grab a couple of shots. He was dazed, but did not appear upset nor in a hurry to fly off and didn't seem to mind a lens only a few feet from his head. Eventually, he gathered himself together and flew off to a branch in a nearby tree.

I "tucked" this little brown thrush into a natural "nest" in a photo of some lichen. The lichen seemed to provide a safe haven for him. The photo was layered and tweaked in Photoshop with only a small amount of cropping on the left. The specific lichen species is unknown to me but is found along with several other species in the area which are visible year round.
