One in a series of intarsia knit face handbags. This is the largest.
The background is hand dyed wool and silk that I hand felt and then free-formed machine embroidered over. The hand knit intasia face is a working pocket. The bag opens with spring hardware to a kid suede lining and pocket. The back and sides and strap are all of the embroidered felt. The strap is adjustable via snaps.
I knit a series of these intarsia faces from scraps of yummy favorites that were leftovers from my yarn shop. These wonderful fibers were from the early 80s. They were a mix of mohair, silk, cotton, rayon, wool and other novelties many of which have never been available again.
I was in the Outer Banks of NC in the summer during a vacation that decided to rain. :-( Fortunately, I had my needles and access to a video store. The hoiday turned into a movie-knit-a-thon.
Later that year I decided to use the faces as pockets on handbags that I made.
