This is my piece for the "Fallen From Grace" Show. It is purposefully a simple male figure with an abstract winged figure in the lower left corner. I am leaving it to the viewer to decide what is happening or has happened. What is the figure doing? Is it sexual, innocent, passionate, sad? If I told you it was my husband how would you feel? Or that it is a gay man? What if he is a young priest or your son or a teacher or an athlete? This piece was born from my desire to stimulate thought and then judgement...Depending on your life, faith, religion, and circumstances you will see and feel different emotions. Judgement will have to be made. Does it mesh with your belief system? Has this man fallen from grace in your eyes or would your thoughts about him, if made public, cause you to fall from grace in another's eyes? Would your religion accept your values still? Would your family or friends? Everyday we make judgements based on first appearances or assumptions. I feel judgement and lack of compassion for others that are sharing a similar emotional human experience as we are is the ultimate Fall From Grace. Putting ourselves higher than others, holding others up to standards that we could not follow ourselves (ie: Priests and no sexual life) is setting everyone including ourselves up for failure.
This piece was created with black Oil Pastel over layers elastomeric compound. It has a wonderful texture and feel to it. It has been finished with a high gloss varathane. It is painted around the sides as a continuation of the piece. It is on a low profile Gallery Wrapped Canvas so there is no need for framing.
