A late swallowtail visits the favorite; Queen Anne's Lace. Swallowtails feed as caterpillars on all the umbellifera species like dill, carrot, fennel. Oh, did you know? Queen's Ann Lace is wild carrot, an escape from colonial kitchen gardens.
If you want butterflies, plant these aromatic lacy plants. The caterpillars will come (pretty green, black and yellow, like a modern design.) Then you will have swallowtails. A beautiful proposition.
This painting is done in monochrome to reflect late summer's browned-out colors after our typical drought. The shade is Daniel Smith's Permanent Brown on a warm colored 200lb paper stock by Waterford. Graphite contour drawing is still somewhat visible under the wash.
