Art: Receding Into Black - My Opium Experience by Artist Kasey Thiele
This was a powerful piece for me to create because I had to recall some emotions from a few years ago when I wasn't in a good place in my life. My boyfriend and I at the time were addicted to drugs (although in denial) and we smoked "black" on a few occasions. It was very sensual, comforting, and frightening all at the same time. I painted the moon because our little "experiments" went on in to the wee hours of the morning. The lovers embracing inside the main poppy represent a feeling of false contentment, safety and love. There is a sinister poppy pod watching over the lovers which symbolizes the evil of addiction, and the outline of the hand holding a lit match represents the relationship about to "go up in smoke". Thankfully my life is quite different now, and the only thing I'm addicted to is my art =o)
