Special thanks to the owner of Quail Flower Barn in Encinitas, California, for allowing me to paint in her poinsettia barn. Quail Flower Barn is a rustic old barn just the other side of the Paul Ecke Ranch, famous for poinsettias, also in Encinitas. Quail Flower Barn is replete with subjects - old wood, brick arches, orange trees, rose gardens, cacti, animals - and naturally it is overflowing with fascinating varieties of poinsettias glowing in the tremendous amount of natural light. There are old B&W photographs of the owner's family and the Paul Ecke Ranch scattered about. I painted three different subjects there three days in a row and am going back for more. I searched the web for more information on the barn, but it seems almost completely undocumented - which doesn't surprise me. I did however find the address: 501 Quail Gardens Dr, Encinitas CA 92024. I recommend a visit to anybody nearby (esp. artists) - it is so charming. What the painting doesn't show is that I was completely beset by poinsettias while I painted. I had to take special care not to forget where I was and absent-mindedly step back into a dozen of them. This painting was posted for sale at my ebay store on December 26th, 2004.
