Art: Transient Glow by Artist Joanna Daneman
The hibiscus is a member of the mallow family, which includes Rose of Sharon, hollyhocks, tropical hibiscus, okra, and marshmallow. The flowers bloom for only one day, thus are symbolic of the transience of beauty and life. This hibiscus is painted in almost pure pigments--only phthalo green is mixed with indigo for the darkest value. The colors are permanent rose, quinacridone violet, naples yellow, quinacridone coral, sap green and green gold. The unmixed pigments and white paper give the effect of sunlight glowing under the leaves and petals and reflecting above.
