This piece was very personal to make -- I remember the days doing my army days in the field and encountering the many Eucalyptus trees. The air was fresh with the Eucalyptus in the air. Many of the dried buds (fruits) were on the ground under the trees. This is but one of the non indigeneous species of Eucalyptus trees here in Hawaii. I also remember when my dad would take us boys feshwater fishing -- the many Eucalyptus trees surrounding us with its beautiful white flowers. The flower sits on top the fruit, and when dried the fruit bud is left and onced dried the fruit bud falls to the ground. This again, is the personal encounters of my childhood days and growing up.
This piece was done using traditional graphite pencil and prismacolor pencils. I used the white of the paper to highlight the Eucalyptus flower, keeping it natural, and using a little white color pencil; and completed the piece using the natural colors of the Eucalyptus. I used browns on the fruit buds; but when dried they turn a grayish coloration. I used a heavier paper - 140 lb water color paper to give a rough and textured effect.
