I could have used the entire photo, but chose to crop off about 50%. This allowed me to focus in on the sense of smell, and feature the rugged working hand contrasting with the delicate glass. It's odd, but even though this portrait doesn't show his entire face, it captures the essence of the man than anything I've taken.
Taken with a Canon 20D digital camera with a 28mm lens, hand-held in very low light conditions (a 40 watt bulb and a sliver of curtain-diffused light from a window) with the ISO set at 1600. I tried to keep alterations in Photoshop consistent with what I might have been able to achieve in a darkroom. I bumped up the contrast a little, and sharpened some (not much, there's some noise at 1600 ISO) after reducing the image to 800p for display here.
